Our Achievements :

(1) BTCL had constructed a nationwide transmission network (NTTN) through deploying different generations of microwave technology and afterwards gradually replaced those with fully optical fiber based SDH / DWDM technology and fiber connectivity through International Terrestrial Cable (ITC).

(2) This nationwide transmission network of BTCL mostly consists of Optical Fiber with a very few exceptions of radio links, linking some remote Upazilas. BTCL has a robust and resilient nationwide optical fiber-based transmission network all over the country up to Upazilas and Union level. This network is facilitating international connectivity through Submarine Cable and International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) for voice, data, and Internet services. Using the vast optical backbone of BTCL, video conferences of our Honorable Prime Minister are regularly being held smoothly to reduce the communication gap between the top administration and grass root level offices.

(3) The total length of the underground optical fiber cable in BTCL's Transmission network was around 6,000 km in 2015. BTCL has recently completed several projects through which all districts have been brought under Optical fiber cable network. Bhola is now connected with optical fiber via PGCB optical fiber and with Microwave System. At present, OFC network of BTCL covers 64 Districts, 474 Upazilas and 1216 Unions, providing modem telecommunication facilities and broadband Internet through 38,000 km underground Optical fibers, which is gradually increasing every year.

(4) BTCL is connected with SEA ME WE4 at Cox's Bazar and SEA ME WE5 at Kuakata and ITC at Benapole via the DWDM Transmission network. The redundancy of the links has been provisioned through Optical Fiber of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh. BTCL has the following backhaul capacity to connect with submarine landing stations and ITC cable border point:

  • Backhaul Capacity from Cox's Bazar to Dhaka of SEA ME WE4 is 540 Gbps
  • Backhaul Capacity from Kuakata to Dhaka of SEA ME WE5 is 600 Gbps
  • Backhaul Capacity from Benapole to Dhaka of ITC is 500 Gbps

(5) BTCL has developed a reliable redundant transmission network from Dhaka to all 64 districts. The divisional headquarters like Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Bogura, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barisal are connected with more than 200 Gbps and 100 Gbps bandwidth.

(6) BTCL is enhancing its transmission capacity which will connect all Upazilas with l00G DWDM connectivity and all districts with 300G connectivity with each other by 2023. Eight divisional headquarters will be connected with Dhaka with 800G/1000G DWDM ASON network. All upazila will have a capacity of multiple 10G and district with 100/200G. It will meet the capacity requirement up to 2030.

(7) To meet the increased demand of bandwidth of mobile sector, BTCL has extended NTTN nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network) services to all the mobile operators of the country in larger scale in 2021-2022 Fiscal Year. It includes optical fiber connectivity, tower sharing and Internet bandwidth. The total optical fiber lease is more than 14,000 km to the mobile operators.

(8) Development of 5G-compliant optical fiber transmission network of BTCL is under the implementation process. Project implementation period is from April 2022 to March 2025 and estimated cost is BDT 1059.10 crore. Under the scope of work of this project, high quality transmission facilities up to Upazilas for easy and reliable access to broadband system will be installed and the transmission capacity will be increased to 300G at District level and to 100G in upazilas level.

(9) BTCL has been providing infrastructure-based services as a corporate service to important government agencies in the public sector, including:

          1. Optical fiber connectivity in all Upazila Election Commissions (438 already connected).

          2. Connectivity and bandwidth required in upazila health complexes of the country (350 upazila health complexes) to deliver telemedicine and e-health services up to the threshold of smart healthcare in smart Bangladesh.

          3. Optical fiber connectivity to 190 Community Vision Centers.

          4. Connection between all the offices of Bangladesh Bank (11).

          5. Fiber and Internet in all e-passport and other passport offices (154 offices).

          6. Connectivity required for highway CCTV cameras of Bangladesh Police.

(10) Social Obligation Works of BTCL: BTCL has taken the following works as social obligation works.

          1. Free Telephone Services for freedom fighters.

          2. Free Telephone and Internet Services for the family of Bir Shrestha of the liberation war.

          3. Free Telephone services at Dhaka and Chittagong International Airport.

          4. Free Wi-Fi services at Press club, Reporters Union, Haat-Bazaar and other important places etc.

          5. Free Internet services at Govt. College, University & Training center. It helps digital educational system especially at corona period to conduct class on online.

          6. Extending Telecommunication Facilities (Broadband Wi-Fi) to the People of Haor, Baor and Remote Areas so that they can use high internet it will break the digital divide.

(11) Currently there is no analog exchange in the country. All exchanges have been converted to digital.

(12) At present there is about 21,500 km of optical fiber infrastructure across the country.

(13) At present, high-speed internet service is being offered at the same price to all districts, upazilas and several unions of the country.

(14) At present optical fiber connection has been provided in 1212 Unions. Installation of optical fiber is in progress in 2,600 more unions.

(15) IP based modern exchanges have already been launched in Dhaka and Chittagong which are gradually expanding to the rest of the country.

(16) Digital exchange has been set up in all upazilas of hilly areas.

(17) At present, connection with the second submarine cable has been provided through the Dhaka-Kuakata high capacity link.
